Population: 371 000
Iquitos was founded as a mission post in 1757. The rubber trade
at the beginning of the 20th century left its mark on the city’s rich architecture. Reminders of this
era are still evident in today’s cityscape. Located on the banks
of the Amazon, it is now Peru’s most important river port. The city
is an important communication
hub for Brazil, Columbia and other Peruvian jungle cities. Iquitos is
the world most populated city that can be reached only by airplane
or boat.
