This small town still preserves the ground plan from the Inca-Empire. Many houses are built on Inca foundations and surrounded
by
the mighty ruins of the Ollantaytambo fortress. In 1536, after they were expelled from
Cusco by the Spaniards, the
Inca retreated to this fortress,
under their leader Manco Inca Yupanqui. From here, a train departs to Aguas Calientes,
starting point for the visit of
Machu Picchu.
