The struggle for an independent Peru started here in 1820,
ignited by Argentinean Jose De
San Martin. On 15 August 2007, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake  occurred, severely damaging
this former fishing village. Over
500 people died and about
16 000 buildings were destroyed. Until today, Pisco is still rebuilding
