Chachapoyas is also called “Gateway to the Amazon”.
It was from here the Spanish conquistadors set out to
explore the depths of the
rainforest. The area is famous
for its numerous relics of the Chachapoyas.
The Kuélap fortress, for instance,
is considered the “Machu Picchu
of the North”. This giant fortress contains more than 400 massive stone houses.
