Copacabana is the main town on the Titicaca Lake, from where
boats leave for the Island of the
Sun. According to Inca beliefs, Manco Capac, the first Inca,
and his sister Mama Oclla were sent to earth and landed on
the Island of the Sun. So, the pilgrimage already existed at
the time of the Inca. Until today, Copacabana is Bolivia’s most famous sanctuary. The cathedral houses the “Virgin de Copacabana”, Bolivia’s national patron saint.
On weekends and holidays,
cars from all over Peru and Bolivia line up in front of the cathedral, waiting to receive the Virgin’s
ritual blessings.
